With his blond hair and blue-eyed good looks, David Christian could pass for a movie war hero sent up by central casting. In real life Christian was barely 18 when be became the youngest second lieutenant ever to graduate from the Army’s Officer Candidate School.

David Christian, a Bristol Township native, Army veteran and the most decorated armed services member in the Vietnam War, recalled the war was still so unpopular 30 years ago that he received death threats before speaking at the memorial’s original dedication. He had to wear a bulletproof vest under his suit that day, Christian said.

The lesson of Vietnam was a simple one, but it was learned at the expense of its veterans, said David Christian of Newtown, Pa., who is one of them: ″Whether you are for the war or against the war, you must be for the warrior.″

Christian, who was one of the youngest, most decorated officers of the Vietnam War, received the Distinguished Service Cross — awarded for extraordinary heroism — but some paperwork was missing from his nomination for the Medal of Honor, a sergeant in Christian’s unit discovered recently.

David Christian, of Washington’s Crossing, Pennsylvania, a lawyer and highly decorated veteran of Vietnam, set me straight. Christian said to stow the anger, think positive, think logically, hold it all in, make it happen. Christian was right, of course.

The Vietnam conflict, by contrast, has not provided a political springboard. Only about 30 of the 535 members of the Senate and House are Vietnam veterans, and when David Christian, possibly the most decorated soldier of the war, ran for Congress from a suburban Pennsylvania district last year, his Republican advisers told him to soft-pedal his military experience.

Christian, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, was the keynote speaker at the event, co-sponsored by state Reps. Tom Murt and Todd Stephens.

It would have been easy for David Christian to give up, to live off an Army captain’s pension and Social Security. But it wasn’t in his nature.

David Christian of Bucks County is a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, co-founder of the Vietnam Veterans of America and one-time presidential appointee and U.S. Senate fellow who ran for Congress twice in the 1980s, losing both times. In business, he runs a company that supplies ground support equipment to the U.S. Navy.
